A book written by a mother, in collaboration with ophthalmologists and paediatricians, to provide information and advice on children's eye health
Children's eyes: a topic of great interest, first and foremost for mothers and fathers who are entrusted with every aspect of caring for the little ones as they grow up.
On 9 April, "Children's eyes"a book written by a mother herself and born out of a personal story, but with the contribution of paediatric ophthalmologists who provide information and advice, especially on visual prevention. Indeed, data show that many eye diseases in children are discovered too late to be optimally managed.
It is a comprehensive guide on children's visual health, with a practical and informative slant and answers common questions and doubts.
The eyes are for all of us, but particularly for children, the window through which we learn about the world around us. Visual function, as is well known, develops in the course of growth: at birth visual capacity is limited and matures during the first 6-8 years of life, influencing posture, learning, attention, reading ability, school and sports performance.
What could happen if something hindered their development? And how would a parent notice it? When to see an ophthalmologist? Is prevention possible?
'The eyes of children' offers an answer to these and many other questions, delving into topics of widespread interest, such as:
- La eye examinationhow to prepare the child and ask the right questions to the doctor.
- I most common problems (myopia, hypermetropia, astigmatism, pseudostrabism, epicanthus, amblyopia, colour blindness).
- Glasseshow to choose them and wear them correctly.
- The first aid and prevention: all good practices and useful tips for small everyday accidents.
- The risks of digital device and how to handle them with your little one.
The authors are Enrica Ferrazzi e Maria Antoinette Stocchino.
Enrica Ferrazzi, Varese, communication expert, writer, after experiencing the visual problems of her daughter Elisa, she founded Progetto Elisa (@occhideibimbi) to publicise and be of help to other parents.
Maria Antoinette Stocchino is an ophthalmologist in Cagliari, and in the book he provides precise indications to reassure against anxieties and fears, especially in the case of long and stressful treatment paths for the child and his family.
"I have always considered myself - tells Enrica - an attentive and caring mother, who put her daughter's well-being before everything else. But on that day in April 20 years ago, I discovered that I had done something wrong... So begins the genesis of this book, written four hands with a dear ophthalmologist friend, Maria Stocchino. Two mothers united to talk about visual health in children, so that other parents do not have to face today what happened to me and my daughter Elisa so many years ago. From information comes prevention and the health of our children'.
The topic is highly topical, as shown by the data of the Sight for Kids, born in 2008 from Project Elisa's collaboration with Lions Club International to carry out early vision screening. Unfortunately, alarming data have emerged: 20% of the more than 130,000 children screened need an eye examination, and 5% of them soon.
The @occhideibimbi community has thus become an important point of reference and boasts the collaboration of ophthalmologists, orthoptists, optometrists, contactologists, educators, psychologists, psychotherapists, paediatricians, speech therapists and even nutrition specialists.
Among them, two renowned professionals present in the book with valuable contributions: Professor Paolo Nucci, President of the Italian Society of Paediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus and who for many years was a member of the editorial board of 'l'Oculista italiano', and Dr. Carla Tomasini, paediatrician and influencer (@PaediatricianCarla).
The book, published by Probewill soon be available in all Italian bookshops.
It will also be presented during 2024 with a press-tour in the main cities of Italy with a calendar that already sees official stops in Cagliari on 27 April, then Turin on 11 May at the Book Fair, then Milan, Rome and other cities.
The tour will provide the perfect opportunity for the tens of thousands of parents who follow @occhideibimbi to meet their regulars in person and for a 'signacopie' with a dedication from the authors.
