Possessing a good visual functionality is a basic requirement for those practising a sport at a competitive levelas some errors during sports performance can be linked to defects in the visual functionality. Good eyesight, in fact, is not only necessary for optimal vision but also for perceive correctly space and for calculating distancesas well as being closely related to a correct posture and to the rapidity of perception of movements. In some disciplines in particular, e.g. motorcycling, contrast sensitivity, visual acuity and and optimal binocular co-ordination are essential elements for an ideal performance.
In recent years, thehe health of the eye and optimal visual function have acquired a central role in the world of sport.
It was recently published in International Journal of Ophthalmology an article on a study whose objective was to evaluate and compare visual function between young athletes and non-athletes. The study showed that some visual abilities were better in the group of athletes compared to non-athletes probably due to the constant 'use' and training of the eyes.
Therefore, it would be appropriate for all athletes regularly (at least once a year) undergo a comprehensive eye examination in order to ensure that the performance visualisation is not a limiting factor during sports performance.
