- The direction of blood flow in the ophthalmic artery is associated with the risk of onset of visual disturbances.
A study showed that the presence of blood flow in the retrograde direction, i.e. from the periphery towards the heart, observed in the ophthalmic artery following carotid angioplasty and stenting (CAS) surgery is associated with an increased risk of experiencing visual disturbances in the postoperative period.
- A deep learning algorithm is able to predict the progression of diabetic retinopathy based on colour photos of the ocular fundus taken during the first visit.
The algorithm, which has shown great accuracy in predicting progression at 6, 12 and 24 months after the first visit, would allow for early diagnosis and early intervention to prevent the most serious damage related to the disease, such as loss of vision.
