S.I.F.I. S.p.A, a leading Italian company in the production of products for Ophthalmology, following an accurate study of its energy consumption, has decided to equip itself, as early as 2013, with a methane cogeneration unit for the simultaneous production of electricity and heat, both used to cover the needs of the production cycles and of the plant in general.
This choice not only allows substantial financial savings for the company itself, but also has positive effects from a social and environmental point of view: in fact, cogeneration leads to savings in the quantity of raw materials compared to the conventional separate production of electricity and heat, with a consequent reduction in the related emissions into the atmosphere.
The new 975 kW electrical cogeneration plant was installed and commissioned in 2013 to meet the plant's energy demand in a share of approximately 70% of electricity consumption and 90% of heat consumption.
The feasibility study, design, authorisation procedures, construction, testing and commissioning of the plant were handled by Ener-g, which also financed the costs through DEP.
