Dry eye under the DEWS II lens

The scientific workshop with all the news from research and the clinical world is back.

Ten years after the first event, DEWS I (2007), the Tear Film & Ocular Surface Society (TFOS™) has promoted a second international Dry Eye workshop, DEWS II (Dry Eye Workshop), which will involve the world's leading experts, the world of research and companies working in the field of Eye Care.
The workshop aims at a 'consensus' regarding the updating of the definition, classification and diagnosis of dry eye and the aetiology, mechanism of onset, distribution and global impact of this pathology in order to better target its management and therapy.
It is estimated that about a quarter of the world's population shows at least the first signs or symptoms of dry eye, and this percentage rises sharply in physiologically more exposed groups such as menopausal women. The incidence of dry eye and of the various manifestations of dry eye is undoubtedly destined to increase in the coming years, primarily due to the increase in average life span and the related ageing of the population. Other risk factors, such as the incidence of diabetes and the continued use of digital devices, are also on the rise.
In 2007, the first DEWS led to a comprehensive report that was published in the scientific journal The Ocular Surface and played an important role in stimulating Dry Eye research. The report concluding DEWS II will be published no earlier than the beginning of 2017. Some preliminary results will, however, be anticipated at the TFOS Congress, which will be held in Montpellier (France) from 7 to 10 September 2016.
Leading Eye care companies are actively involved in this initiative and, among these sponsors, SIFI is particularly interested in the results of frontier research on this disease from which answers to the needs of patients suffering from dry eye and other ocular surface disorders may come.
