Diagnostic and therapeutic algorithm for eye infections

The new monograph by l'Oculista Italiano

The editorial team of 'l'Oculista Italiano' is pleased to announce that, starting from second half of June, a new  volume of the series 'Le Monografie'.

This latest volume, entitled 'Diagnostic Therapeutic Algorithm of Ocular Infections', was created thanks to the valuable contribution of all the authors, undisputed opinion leaders in the various fields of ophthalmology, and is defined by the editor-in-chief himself, Dr. C. Chines,  "a publishing novelty'. It is, in fact, a photographic atlas focusing on the topic of eye infections. The atlas, from completely new graphic layout, aims to provide ophthalmologists with an in-depth look at the current and important topic of eye infections and to contribute, through images of clinical cases, at diagnostic processwhich can sometimes be not entirely straightforward.
The monograph opens with a Foreword by Dr Augusto Pocobelli, director of the Department of Ophthalmology - Eye Bank of the San Giovanni - Addolorata Hospital in Rome, who oversaw its entire structure in the role of scientific coordinator, followed by aIntroduction written by Prof. Stefania Stefani and Prof. Claudio Bucolo on one of the greatest health challenges of our century, that of multi-resistance to antibiotics. The introduction, whose topic will soon be the subject of further investigations by the editorial team of l'Oculista Italiano, emphasises above all the central role of the ophthalmologist in preventing and containing the phenomenon of antibiotic resistance: "lhe appropriateness of antibiotic prescription in ophthalmology plays a crucial role in containing the spread of ophthalmic infections'..

The Atlas is divided into 5 sections, identified  according to ocular district affected by the infectious process: 1. Orbit, eyelids and tear ducts; 2. Conjunctiva; 3. Cornea; 4. Uvea; 5. Endophthalmitis. All sections contain a focus on infectious pathology accompanied by images of clinical cases and above all by a specific diagnostic-therapeutic algorithm.

Concluding the monograph, the last section devoted entirely to the endophthalmitis, which part from the epidemiological data available today to conclude with an in-depth look at intravitreal injection endophthalmitis, the route of administration of many innovative treatments introduced in recent years (anti-VEGF drugs, steroids, etc.).

This atlas is not only an in-depth tool for all those working in the field but also, as Dr Chines writes, "a tool for further dialogue with patients, who are increasingly disorientated by a world where uncontrolled misinformation rules the day'.

Happy reading.
