Appointment in Vienna for the ESCRS 2023 congress, a showcase for the most advanced innovations and a meeting point for research teams, surgeons and companies.
Cataract surgery is currently the most frequently performed surgery in ophthalmology, both in Italy and worldwide.
Post-operative visual results and recovery of visual function are now optimal, thanks to the increasingly high-performance characteristics of intraocular lenses implanted in place of the opacified natural crystalline lens and to minimally invasive surgical techniques that are increasingly respectful of the physiology of ocular tissues.
But what lies behind the extraordinary progress that refractive cataract surgery has experienced in recent decades?
First of all, scientific research, supported by major investments, which, in addition to innovative phacoemulsifiers, such as the fetmo-laser, has led to the development of extremely high-performance intraocular lenses (IOLs), such as the EDOF.
In particular, EDOFs based on the distribution of spherical aberrations of opposite sign in the central part of the optics, such as SIFI's Mini WELL and Mini WELL PROXA, are characterised by the creation of a single continuous focus, which allows high quality vision at all distances - near, intermediate and far - eliminating the need to wear glasses in many cases.
A key moment where the ophthalmology world focuses on the latest innovations in cataract surgery and where research teams, clinicians and surgeons meet the world of manufacturers is the ESCRS congress, which this year takes place in Vienna from 8 to 12 September.
