Cataracts: listen to the podcast

One of the most common eye diseases and for which technological innovations, both in diagnostics and surgery, have enabled extraordinary progress in restoring optimal quality of vision.

Difficulty reading or watching TV? Halos or split images in the presence of light sources, such as lamps or headlights? Are these typical symptoms of cataractone of the most frequent eye diseases. Often linked to ageing, this disorder due to opacification of the crystalline lens not only reduces quality of life, but also increases the risk of falls and road accidents.

The surgical solution can solve other refractive problems as well, as explained in the fourth episode of 'Ascolta e vedrai', L'Oculista Italiano's podcast to promote and support visual wellbeing and learn about and protect our eyes.

Cataracts are, however, not only due to the physiological ageing process of advancing years. Listening to the podcast you can, in fact, discover other causes of this eye disorder such as taking certain medications.

Resolutive therapy consists of the removal of the opacified lens, followed by the implantation of an intraocular lens (IOL, IntraOcular Lens). The most important innovations in cataract surgery have concerned intraocular lenses, and the IOLs currently available are also able to correct refractive defects, such as myopia or presbyopia, if they are already present in the eye. Today, in fact, the most advanced intraocular lenses, used in so-called 'refractive cataracts', make it possible to regain an optimal quality of vision at all distances: near, intermediate and far, with the result of restoring near-natural vision and, in many cases, doing without spectacles altogether.

Restoring good eyesight not only improves physical, mental and emotional health, but also helps prevent possible accidents and falls.

In the podcast's few minutes of narration, you get, in a simple and immediate way, a wealth of useful information not only for recognising the symptoms and risk factors of cataracts, but also for having tips to quickly solve the problem and find out, for example, how to do without glasses after surgery and recover vision with fewer adaptation problems or side effects such as glare and halos.

Although cataract surgery is now routine, it should not be forgotten that it is important to reduce the risk of inflammation and infection in the postoperative period. In addition to eye drops that combine cortisone and antibiotic, artificial tears that ensure adequate hydration of the ocular surface and maximum respect for its physiological balance can be particularly useful. Among these, the podcast recalls, products that do not contain preservatives, which slow down the ocular healing process, are to be preferred.

The podcast of the series  'Listen and you will see' by 'l'Oculista Italiano is present on the platforms - Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, Spotify, Spreaker - and on oculistaitaliano.itwhere you can also find other insights and updates. The next episode will be dedicated to keratitis.

The progressive edof iol: one year later

The Mini WELL IOL (SIFI Medtech), the first progressive aspheric intraocular lens (IOL), incorporates a novel optical design to provide an extended depth of focus (EDOF) from distance to near vision. Published results from in vitro studies show that the Mini WELL delivers good optical quality at distance, intermediate, and near foci and offers some performance benefits when compared with trifocal IOLs and an extended range of vision IOLs.
