The 'en face' OCT in AMD
Antero-posterior OCT and en face OCT are essential in diagnosing AMD, especially the exudative form. They are also essential in the monitoring of serous, haemorrhagic or neuroepithelial detachments, in the study of CNV, in the diagnosis of idiopathic polypoid vasculopathy and in the evaluation of the results of anti-angiogenic therapies.
In AMD, 'en face' OCT is an important complement to antero-posterior OCT scanning, which only gives incomplete information on retinal pigment epithelium (EPR) detachment and may induce errors in diagnosis during image analysis. On the other hand, frontal 'en face' OCT scans, both flat and especially those adapted to the concavity of the pigmented epithelium, are able to localise the smallest detachment of the EPR and identify its morphological features, shape, wall characteristics and the appearance of neovases.
