Age-Related Macular Degeneration

Age-Related Macular Degeneration

As we see in clinical practice, age-related or senile macular degeneration (AMD) is a very frequent pathology.
In its various forms, it has very precise connotations, although both diagnostic and, even more so, therapeutic facets are many and varied. In recent years, considerable progress has been made in the treatment of neovascular forms of AMD, with the introduction of intravitreal injections with anti-VEGF.
Few of us until recently knew what was meant by anti-VEGF, whereas we are now familiar with these proteins, substances capable of modulating the formation of neovases, retinal fluid and consequently the evolution of the disease. Of course we cannot think we have found the 'cure', precisely because AMD is a multifactorial disease and therefore much must be done on prevention and correction of risk factors, our constant and priority commitment in the coming years. Genetics can help us, as can careful nutritional pharmacotherapy with the latest generation of antioxidants and neuroprotectives.
New therapies for vascular forms will be available in the coming months and all ophthalmologists will increasingly have to deal with medical-legal and administrative issues. This will certainly result in a greater commitment on our part, but also a major cultural and research stimulus.
On behalf of all the authors, I would like to thank Sifi, its president and all the staff, Ada Puglisi in the lead, for the support given for the drafting of this work, which as you can see has an important weight and a high level of structuring.
Finally, thanks to all the authors, who with great passion and professionalism made this publication possible.
Happy reading!
