Toric IOLs routine or exception?

Cataract surgery has long been a refractive surgery of the crystalline lens.

The removal of the lens, which is more or less opaque, and the implantation of an artificial lens correct the pre-operative refractive defect, producing a post-surgical ametropia that improves the quality and quantity of the patient's vision.
With this in mind, the artificial lens landscape has been enriched with lenses for the simultaneous correction of presbyopia, with depth of field (EDOF) models and with other simpler types of lenses for the correction of corneal astigmatism: the Toric IOLs.
Recent international case studies estimate the number of patients with cataracts and corneal astigmatism greater than 1.5 dioptres at 20% and at least 30% with values less than one diopter.
From this, it is well understood that the problem of the astigmatic patient requiring cataract surgery is a statistically significant realitywhich has immediate practical repercussions.
