How best to manage this extremely annoying condition, especially in the summer months.
Reddened, fatigued, irritated eyes: a condition of discomfort and discomfort that we all experience frequently and which is referred to in its many manifestations as 'ocular discomfort'.
In order to restore a healthy condition and the correct balance of the tear system, one can resort to the administration of artificial tears and, in particular, products containing thehyaluronic acid.
The latter in fact constitute the optimal treatment, in particular for:
- patients with dry eye/dry eye
- patients in antiglaucomatosis drug therapy
- chronic users of eye drops with preservatives
- who undergoes ocular surgery
- patients with ocular trauma
- bearers of contact lenses
The moisturising and protective action of the ocular surface is due to the special characteristics of thehyaluronic acidwhose chemical structure determines a particular ability to combine with water and the ability to mimic the behaviour of mucins (natural components of the tear film). These special properties help maintain the stability of the tear film and ensure optimal protection and lubrication of the eye.
Hyaluronic acid also plays an important biological role in corneal repair processes.
With regard to the latter, a particularly topical issue concerns the increasing number of patients who undergo refractive surgery to reduce or eliminate their dependence on spectacles.
La PRK or photorefractive keratectomy leads to an altered morphology of the corneal epithelium and decreased corneal sensitivity, which, by reducing the blinking frequency, is at the root of reduced tear secretion and thus tear instability.
The patient is consequently affected by symptoms of dry eye which may also be due to a pre-existing dry eye condition that worsens following surgery. Symptomatology may persist several months after the surgery itself.
Clinical data on myopia patients undergoing bilateral PRK show that treatment with hyaluronic acid at a concentration of 0.2% (Hyalistil BIO - SIFI):
– promotes a rapid recovery of the normal conditions of the corneal surface
– increases the stability of the tear film, protecting and lubricating the ocular surface
– reduces the post-operative symptoms during the entire study period, eliminating the symptoms of ocular discomfort at the end of the treatment period (90 days).
