In this first appointment dedicated to dry eye syndrome, we present the pathology, symptoms and risk factors that characterise this widespread eye condition.
An eye disorder, long underestimated, but also destined to increase rapidly due to our excessive use of mobile phones, tablets and computers, which has become even more pronounced during the pandemic.
Dry eye syndrome is a growing problem worldwide and in all age groups, even among children and adolescents, and the World Health Organisation recently named it as one of the most ignored and underestimated diseases of modern times.
Dry eye in Italy affects 90 per cent of menopausal women and 25 per cent of the population over 50. In fact, as age advances, the eyes produce tears with a lower lipid content, necessary to prevent their watery part from evaporating too quickly. On the other hand, changes in hormone levels can reduce the natural production of tears and thus the female sex especially after 35-40 years of age and pregnant or menopausal women are one of the largest patient groups.
