  • Serum Vitamin D deficiency is a risk factor for the onset of TED (Thyroid Eye Disease), a disease of the orbit of inflammatory origin often associated with the presence of thyroid diseases, such as Graves' disease. Confirmation comes from a study conducted in the United States, the results of which suggest the usefulness of using Vitamin D supplements for patients suffering from Graves' disease in the earliest stages of the disease, so as to have a preventive effect. • The onset of diabetic retinopathy is favoured more by insulin resistance than by hyperglycaemia. In fact, a study in non-diabetic patients showed that insulin resistance significantly increases the likelihood of developing retinopathy even in subjects with normal blood glucose values, highlighting the retina's greater susceptibility to altered cellular response to insulin, rather than to excess blood glucose. Bao Y.K. et al. Association of Retinopathy and Insulin Resistance: NHANES 2005-2008. Curr Eye Res., 2019. 28:1-4.
