'Art for the blind' at the Ara Pacis in Rome

The project, sponsored by SIFI, is part of the programme "L'Arte ti Accoglie: progetti di accessibilità nei Musei Civici" in Rome

Museums 'without frontiers', suitable for all, to offer the entire public the possibility of access by breaking down architectural and sensory barriers and highlighting good practices aimed at inclusion. With this intention Rome Capital, Assessorato alla Crescita culturale - Sovrintendenza Capitolina ai Beni Culturali, with the museum services of Zètema Progetto Cultura, launched in several spaces of the Civic Museum Network a rich offer of tactile routes and training activities for students and specialised operators as part of the 'Musei da toccare' project.

ART FOR THE BLIND
In line with these initiatives comes Art For the Blindunique experimental project conceived and designed for the Ara Pacis Museum by and for the blind. Visitors suffering from blindness or from sight-reducing diseases will be able to access the museum's extraordinary heritage and 'get in touch' with the mythical past of the Urbe, the history of the altar and Augustus through a new and special multi-sensory explorationin a mix of emotion and historical-artistic rigour.
The project, inaugurated on 14 March 2017is promoted by Roma Capitale - Department of Cultural Growth - Capitoline Superintendence for Cultural Heritage with the collaboration of Antenna - Connecting the world to culturethe technological support of Tooteko - Talking tactile and SIFI with the museum services of Zètema Progetto Cultura and it is completely free of charge for visitors.
In the absence of sight, it is the hands that 'see' thanks to innovative technology: a sensory ringa true element of innovation, capable of recognising special sensors applied next to the works and triggering audio descriptive information; a special sensors encapsulated in Braille encoding, placed on the bases of the works or reproductions thereof; a tablet, with audio notes that tell anecdotes and stories related to the activated opera segments; a thermoform, i.e. a tactile map, with useful safety information (e.g. physical obstacles) and a guide to the location of audio-tactile works, for greater autonomy within the museum space. The thermoform was realised with the collaboration of the Istituto dei Ciechi di Milano.
Along the route, divided into six pointsthe visitor will be able to listen to the description of the area of the Campus Martius - as it appeared in the time of Augustus - get to know the protagonists of the imperial family and, subsequently, thanks to the model of the Altar, explore the different architectural segments of the monument as well as the panels of the Mother Earth, the processions, the Goddess Rome and the Sacrifice of Aeneas. Finally, on the actual monument it will be possible to visit the interior of the altar and explore one of the panels of the vegetal frieze.
