High-tech IOLs, which by now we all know as IOL Premiumare truly the most advanced frontier of modern refractive cataract surgery. A few questions for Prof. Gianni Alessio
To answer the hottest questions and get some 'tips' on the latest developments, we invited some opinion leaders who are at the forefront of both the scientific debate and surgical practice.
We begin with Prof. Gianni Alessio, Director of the Ophthalmology Clinic at the University of Bari.
In your experience, what are the factors that most influence the post-operative results that can be achieved with the new EDOF IOLs in the surgical correction of presbyopia?
 G. Alessio: A regular and prolonged cornea ensures the best function of the lens. A pupil that is not too small is also a positive factor.
What are the pluses of the latest generation of EDOF IOLs that mark a decisive step forward?
 G. Alessio: The absence of halos is the big step forward. High myopic young patients with cataracts in whom the Mini WELL IOL was implanted report no discomfort and are very happy with the result.
What are the main factors limiting the deployment of the new EDOF IOLs?
G. Alessio: The factors limiting the spread of extended depth of focus lenses to date are certainly the presence of other eye diseases and cost. If these lenses cost the same as single vision lenses, how many would be implanted?
We leave to our Readers the answer to the question that Prof. Gianni Alessio has deliberately left open with his usual elegance.
Gianni Alessio
Professor of Ophthalmology since 1991, Gianni Alessio is currently Director of the Ophthalmology Clinic at the University of Bari.
He specialises in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the ocular surface, cornea, lens and retina. A particular focus of his work is the treatment of ametropias.
In terms of research, he is very active in clinical trials concerning cataract surgery, refractive surgery and the treatment of keratoconus.
He is very involved both in scientific publications and in the main ophthalmological societies. In particular, he is a member of the Technical-Scientific Committee of AICCER (Italian Association of Cataract and Refractive Surgery).
